The Life Hack for Everything

I can already see some skeptical looks coming my way at ninety miles an hour. I have my tennis racket ready . . .

This is something that I’ve been implementing in my own life recently, and it has worked beautifully. So I wanted to share it with you!

First off, what is a hack? It’s a way to make something easier. At least that’s the definition I’m going with right now. It could be a technique, a process, a tool, one of MacGyver’s inventions, you name it. And you could be hacking (life) in this instance, as well as any number of mundane chores, difficult projects, cumbersome tasks, or none of the above.

You might just be dealing with a day at work that seems to be lasting approximately three billion years, and it’s only 10:30am.

What’s the one hack that combines a technique, process, and a tool to fix absolutely everything you might have to deal with?

Don’t hold your breath. It’s way simpler than you think. It’s probably something you’ve heard before a million times but never really thought about in the way I’m going to put it. It’s as old as the universe (no joke) and everybody over the age of 3 has to deal with it.


The brain is a tool. It commands every process you do. And as for a technique . . . you’ll have to wait a minute.

Think of it this way. You’re at work, and it’s a really good day. Everything is functioning properly, time is going fast, and you can’t help smiling.

Yeah. Rare, right?

But you’ve probably had at least one of those days.

Did you simply enjoy it while it lasted, or did you take the time to ask yourself why you were having such a good day? If you took that time, you probably came to a conclusion. It might have been because you were constantly thinking about something positive. Someone gave you a really cool gift. That special someone smiled at you.

Or you might have just been eating chocolate all day.

That’s a possibility.

In that case, keep eating chocolate. They say you’re harder to kidnap if you weigh a lot.

But there are days that don’t work out! Those are the days I’m talking about fixing. They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. (Matthew 9:12b) So what to do about the bad days? Where’s the physician?


You can think about something good even when it didn’t happen that morning or the previous day. It could be something that happened 2,000 years ago.

When you’re working on something that’s frustrating, it’s easy to focus on it. I stood outside in 14°F yesterday for an hour and a half. Pressure-washing. At eye level. On a slope. Without proper gear. I had a pair of latex gloves, a coat, and no coveralls.

But you know what? The water froze a few moments after it hit the metal I was washing, and it was really satisfying to watch it flip up and fly away in chunks when I went back over it. I found a way to hold the gun so I could keep my hands balled up and comparatively warm unfrozen.

You can be dealing with the most miserable circumstances ever, and still find good things about them.

But “keep positive” isn’t the thought I had when I started writing. It was one of them, sure. There are other things that go hand-in-hand with it. Sometimes having a positive attitude is practically impossible.

There are days that just won’t work. Hours that are slower than molasses crawling uphill backwards in January. Frustrations pile up and inevitably obscure the view of all that is pure and lovely and full of chocolate.

Unless your sink is plugged with chocolate, and then it just joins the list of frustrations.

What can you use to keep yourself cheerful?

There are lots of things. God made this earth and called it good. He didn’t have bad things to say about it, did he? Not until Satan came along and screwed things up, at least.

The first thing would be to focus on the things that God says are good, in a world that constantly focuses on things like the paycheck, personal gratification, noise, distraction, media, technology . . . all this stuff came after God said the world was good, am I right?

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

We are told to think on these things. Not about them. You can think about anything in passing. Thinking on something means to dwell on it.

All of these things are really great. I might dive into them in a separate blog post, but for today just the purity part.

What’s purity? Anything can be pure. It doesn’t just mean the color white or being virgin or 24 karat gold.

Do you ever feel cluttered? Like, inside your head? What if all that could be cleared away and become pure? It would suddenly be easy to make good choices, stay focused, and not have to deal with your addiction to chocolate.

So that’s the “technique” part of the brain I was talking about a minute ago. There’s a way to start decluttering your brain, and there’s an order to it. I haven’t got it all figured out myself: I’m only human, but I thought I’d share a few of the tips I’ve got so far. Maybe you all can comment below if you know more of these techniques.

I have heard the phrase “I just don’t have enough time to do (fill in the blank)” way too much recently. People are having a time pandemic. What’s up with that? Are the clocks spinning faster? I mean, they could be . . . *Starts forming new conspiracy theory* But there’s 24 hours in a day, and we all use it for something. Work, play, eating, sleeping, thinking. There’s plenty of pie charts out there.

There are things that are necessary. You have to work to eat. You have to sleep in order to function. And there are certainly things that are unnecessary. If you took every moment in the day that you weren’t doing something completely necessary to survival as a human being, you’d have a lot of time on your hands.

What we use that time for is either to our benefit or our detriment.

I’m sure that’s somebody else’s quote but I don’t know who.

That’s the first thing on the list. Time is one thing to purify. Focus on the things that help you.

Another thing you can purify is your surroundings. Everybody breathed a wistful sigh right there. I could feel it.

But I’m not talking about the workplace or anywhere you don’t have control over. Even most of your house isn’t entirely under your control if you have other people living with you.

It’s good to have your own little safe haven somewhere that’s clean. And there are multiple levels to “clean.”

You can pick things up off the floor and put them away.

Good idea. That way you’ll be able to get to the window if there’s a fire.

But what about the rest of the room? Even in a small space, you can give yourself the feeling of ample room with simple techniques like clearing your walls and using light colors of paint.

The type of decoration you use can be helpful, too. For example, I took down my curtain rod and replaced it with a long, narrow branch. My doorknob is also a branch. I don’t really have anything else I can call “decoration.” Keep it simple. Minimal distraction. But also beautiful, and in your style.

Another sub-topic is minimalization. There are books galore on this subject, but I can inspire you with one sentence! Get rid of stuff you don’t use, and don’t be afraid of offending people.

A lot of the stuff sitting around unused . . . well it probably consists of gifts, dollar-tree buys, birthday cards from when you were five years old, and random plastic items that aren’t even broken but are so flimsy you’re afraid you’d break them if you used them.

Your grandma isn’t going to get her feelings hurt if you throw away that birthday card.

I recently started cleansing my room of material that doesn’t align with the verse I gave you earlier, and man, it has been so liberating. I love the clean feeling.

Clean stuff up, get rid of stuff, fix the surroundings to create a nice environment.

That’s technique number two.

Be nice to people for absolutely no reason.

You’ll be amazed at how wonderful it makes you feel. It doesn’t have to be a gift you spent money on. In fact, it’s probably better if it’s not. But the simple act of handing someone something without being asked, or chatting about something that really doesn’t matter to you, can often make their day. And it’s one of life’s great satisfactions to know you’ve made someone’s day.

That’s number three.

So the life hack? Attitude. That’s all there is to it. You can make anything easy if you use your brain in the right way. I’ve been focusing my time a lot more, recently, and it’s helped so much that I wanted to share it with y’all. Let me know if you want more of this kind of thing.
